NDP Leader Site Visit at South East Toronto FHT

The NDP Leader site visit sparked an insightful discussion about advocating for increased funding to support existing healthcare providers and attract physicians to clinics like Health Access Taylor Massey (HATM). This is due to the ever-increasing demand for quality healthcare services and the existing shortage of healthcare professionals directly impacting patient care and outcomes. During the visit, Stephen Beckwith, Executive Director, Kevin Workentin, Chief of Family Medicine and Marit Stiles, MPP, Leader of the Official Opposition of Ontario discussed the importance of advocating for increased funding to enable continued support for healthcare providers through competitive wages, physician funding, community resources, and other essential means.

The discussion also addressed the issue of staff burnout in clinics like HATM. The patients that providers see at HATM can be challenging, and most come from places where healthcare is more reactionary than preventative. To change this mindset, providers must build rapport and trust to encourage patients to seek preventative care rather than rush to the ER when illnesses manifest. Physicians and healthcare providers face challenging ethical dilemmas and emotionally taxing decisions, especially within the outreach team.

We can cultivate a healthier and more sustainable work environment by acknowledging and actively combating these issues and advocating for their resolution. Prioritizing the well-being of healthcare providers and incentivizing physicians can ensure continuity of care for patients seen at clinics like HATM and foster a more resilient and compassionate healthcare system for the community
