Learning Objectives Participants will be able to:
- Utilize strategies to identify all stakeholders involved in the system
- Develop strategies to engage international students (or newcomers) new to the area and unfamiliar to healthcare and educational system
- Design teaching tools to help newcomers/patient/clients navigate the system
- How and when to advocate for patients/clients, with respect to all aspects of their care
- Work collaboratively with other health care professionals and community agencies and experts to provide holistic care by addressing metal, health, environmental safety and social determinants.
Summary/Abstract The arrival of the international students began January 2018 and the number is expected to climb significantly by September 2018. Oftentimes these young individuals are unfamiliar with their surroundings and need support to maintain good health and well being. Living arrangements and food options are compromised as a result of their significant environmental change and the need to readjust with little support to address the social side of things. The Windsor Family Health Team (WFHT) College Nurse has identified and acted upon opportunities to collaborate with community and college representatives to educate and equip these students with information and tools needed to keep themselves safe, healthy and informed. Community partners include Public Health, AIDS Committee of Windsor, Police Services, local bar owners, Sexual Assault Treatment Centre, WFHT Dietitian, Multicultural Centre, Housing of Windsor-Essex and insurance among many others. This strategy can be used to inspire other organizations that are working with ‘hard to reach’ clients/patients and newcomers. The techniques used and types of relationships established are examples of the various methods that can be exercised in similar circumstances to help other marginalized groups or those unfamiliar with the system.
