Learning Objectives

  1. Identify key challenges of a fractured health care system as experienced by a person with complex mental illness.
  2. Evaluate the use of an e-platform and mobile application to coordinate a continuum of care.
  3. Weigh the pros and cons of using increasingly technological methods of coordinating mental health care.

Summary/Abstract

People with complex mental illness, like psychosis, experience a 15-20 year shorter life expectancy due to premature cardiovascular complications.  Tobacco use, poor diet, and physical inactivity contribute to this increased risk which is further compounded by genetic predisposition and metabolic complications caused by antipsychotic medications.  The disorganizing effects of mental illness coupled with medication non-adherence cause people with mental illness to require access to a continuum of health care services.  The healthcare system in Ontario lacks consistent collaboration between primary medical care and specialized mental health care.  This results in gaps in treatment and poorer outcomes for the patient.  To address this gap, the Technology-Enabled Collaborative Care for Youth (TECC-Y) co-designed e-platform and mobile application uses a “one-stop shop” model to engage youth with first episode psychosis, maximize access to care for clients and their families, and contribute to a more satisfying caregiving experience for clinicians.      Our innovative platform connects each patient with a “Virtual Care Team” providing them with expert advice from a psychiatrist, nutritionist, peer mentor, occupational therapist, and more.     Our interactive workshop will demonstrate the feeling of a fractured health care system as experienced by the patient with chronic mental illness and introduce the TECC-Y e-platform as a potential direction for health care remodeling.      Link to platform demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnjCPKn376Q&feature=youtu.be
