Spirometry Interpretation Workshop September 11, 2018  l  5:30 - 8:30 p.m. Location: Riverwalk Restaurant - 3 Ecclestone Dr, Unit 2, Bracebridge, ON P1L 2B2 Spirometry Interpretation: Dr. Allan Coates, MDCM, B.Eng., was a Pediatric Respirologist as well as the Medical Director of the Pulmonary Function Lab, Division of Respiratory Medicine, at the Hospital for Sick Children for many years. He is now Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto and Senior Scientist Emeritus in the Research Institute. Dr. Coates also has degrees in both engineering and medicine from McGill University in Montreal. His recent publications have focused on the promotion and use of pulmonary function testing to enhance diagnosis and management of lung disease in children and adults. In addition, Dr. Coates was the Pediatric Respirologist Mentor for the Collaborative Care Pilot Program with The Lung Association-Ontario. Spirometry Ins & Outs: Lana Biro, BSc, RRT, CRE is a Curriculum Developer for the Provider Education Program at The Lung Association. She is involved in development and implementation of various educational programs and resource tools on Asthma, COPD and Spirometry for healthcare providers. Along with her experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist and a Certified Respiratory Educator for The Lung Association’s Lung Health Information Line, Lana has worked in many clinical settings including acute care, home care and pulmonary function testing. Lana is a facilitator for SpiroTREC®, AsthmaTREC® and COPDTREC® workshops in Ontario. She is also a CAMH/TEACH-trained Motivational Interviewing workshop facilitator. Learning Objectives: By the end of this presentation, the participant will be able to:
  • Emphasize the role of spirometry as an objective measurement of lung disease
  • Review the terms and lung function measurements as they apply to spirometry interpretation
  • Identify criteria for test acceptability, repeatability and reversibility
  • Correctly interpret spirometry examples through case study practice
