The Electronic Asthma Management System (eAMS) is an evidence-based clinical decision support system developed to improve your ability to deliver best care for patients with asthma.


WHAT DOES THE eAMS DO?
The eAMS was designed to help providers to bridge the 3 main evidence-to-practice gaps that have been identified across care settings and are believed to be the major cause of poor disease control and healthcare utilization in patients with asthma.

WHO IS THE eAMS FOR?
The eAMS was designed by primary care providers, for primary care providers. The tool was designed to assist clinicians in busy real-world primary care settings. The system can be used by any provider. Because the system makes prescription recommendations, the most common users are physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. Other team members could also use the system and receive signoff from a prescriber for any required medication changes. The system is available for all asthma patients aged 16 years and older.

HOW DOES THE eAMS WORK?
eAMS is designed to work seamlessly within your normal workflow and the system is fully integrated with OSCAR EMR and Telus PS EMR. The eAMS consists of 3 elements:


1. A patient questionnaire which patients access on the eAMS portal through either their home computer or their smartphone/tablet through our mobile app. Up to 1 week before their clinic appointment, they are asked to complete this simple questionnaire about their symptoms, triggers, and medications.
2. A set of evidence-based algorithms built on the latest Canadian and International asthma guidelines. They determine the patient’s asthma control level, any required medication escalation or de-escalation, and best therapy in the “yellow zone” (acute loss of control zone) of the asthma action plan, then auto-populate a personalized asthma action plan based on patient and provider inputs.
3. An EMR-integrated decision support interface. When you open a patient chart, a notification alerts you of your patient’s asthma control status and if any actions are required. Clicking on the notification will open a new secure window on top of the chart which contains the decision support (no separate login required). The system guides you through up to 5 screens and typically takes 3-4 minutes to complete. All actions in the CDSS are automatically documented in a chart note, and the asthma action plan is available in your patient’s chart as a ‘Document.’
