Choosing Wisely is excited to announce the release of new tools and resources available from the Using Antibiotics Wisely campaign.
Using Antibiotics Wisely was launched two years ago to encourage clinician and patient conversations about the harms of unnecessary antibiotic use. With support from the Public Health Agency of Canada, they have focused our efforts on reducing unnecessary antibiotics for respiratory tract infections in primary care and asymptomatic bacteriuria in long-term care.
On November 13, 2019, they will launch new tools and resources from the long-term care campaign developed in collaboration with the College of Family Physicians of Canada, the Long-Term Care Medical Directors Association of Canada, and the Canadian Nursing Association. These tools and other resources available for primary care will be presented on our monthly webinar series, Choosing Wisely Talks at 12:00 p.m. ET with Dr. Jerome Leis, Using Antibiotics Wisely Clinician Lead and Infectious Disease Physician at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, and Dr. Andrea Moser, Family Physician from Baycrest Centre.
This release coincides with Antibiotic Awareness Week (November 18-24, 2019). Antibiotic Awareness Week is a global event, aiming to increase the awareness of antibiotic resistance and encourage best practices among the public, patients, and clinicians.
They are reaching out to campaign partners and key stakeholders to help them communicate the Using Antibiotics Wisely campaign with your community through the various channels available to you. Attached is a toolkit to support your communications efforts through email, social media, newsletters, conferences, and more. Please also send this material to any partners or staff to help them spread the word about the campaign.
They hope that you will join them on November 13, 2019 for the webinar and look forward to our coordinated communications efforts throughout Antibiotic Awareness Week.

Choosing Wisely Talks | Double Down on Antimicrobial Stewardship: Practical Ways to Use Antibiotics Wisely to Manage Respiratory and Urinary Tract Infection in Community Practice
Unnecessary antibiotic use is a direct contributor to antimicrobial resistance – one of the top 10 threats to global health. In Canada, over 90% of antibiotics are prescribed in the community. The Using Antibiotics Wisely campaign has leveraged antimicrobial stewardship efforts to reduce unnecessary antibiotics for the two most inappropriately treated conditions: respiratory tract infections (RTI) in primary care and urinary tract infections (UTI) in long-term care. Join Drs. Jerome Leis and Andrea Moser on Wednesday, November 13 for a review of practical tips on how to use antibiotics judiciously in the management of these conditions, based on practice change recommendations developed by healthcare professional across the country.
The learning objectives for this webinar are to:
- Provide an overview of the Using Antibiotics Wisely campaign to date
- Review practice change recommendations that promote judicious use of antibiotics for management of respiratory tract infection in primary care and urinary tract infection in long-term care
- Highlight examples of successful clinical tools that support these practice changes and used in practices across Canada
The Choosing Wisely Talks Webinar Series is a Group Learning program that has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada for up to 1 Mainpro+ credits and is a self-approved group learning activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
