Hosted by the Dalla Lana School of Public Health
At Beyond the Body: PhotoVoice Exhibit, organizers will share the unique experiences of young South Asians tackling the diabetes epidemic in the Peel Region of Ontario, Canada. Through photography, they will look beyond traditional biomedical and behavioural approaches to diabetes prevention and highlight the impact of social and systemic factors on the development of diabetes. Through the eyes of South Asian youth, we will examine how migration stressors, income insecurity, mental health, the built environment, and interpersonal relationships influence diabetes risk in their ethnic communities. This ground-breaking initiative led by members of the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto exemplifies how youth can be mobilized to become agents of change in their communities, and work towards breaking the cycle of diabetes.
The South Asian Adolescent Diabetes Awareness Program (SAADAP) was a multi-phase research project that aimed to increase awareness and knowledge of diabetes prevention from a behavioural and social science lens in South Asian adolescents aged 13 to 17 years with a family history of diabetes. A research team at the University of Toronto's Dalla Lana School of Public Health implemented this community-driven, culturally and youth appropriate, evidence-based health promotion program during 2017-2019.
At the Beyond the Body: PhotoVoice Exhibit, we will be sharing the results of our research findings. We invite all public health and healthcare professionals, researchers, social service providers, community members and families and friends of SAADAP participants to attend this event. The event will promote knowledge sharing and enhance critical consciousness among the South Asian community and among stakeholders involved with decision making and policy making in the community.
The virtual exhibit will be presented in the form of a documentary on the following dates:
- September 16, 2020 from 12:00pm to 1:00pm
- September 19, 2020 from 2:00pm to 3:00pm
- September 22, 2020 from 6:00pm to 7:00pm
