Summary/Abstract:
This presentation will explore findings from a pilot project launched by CMHA Ontario to support physician well-being in primary care and hospital settings. By exploring the development and launch of this pilot, its positive results, and opportunities for improvement, participants will learn about the physician leader experience with this new curriculum pilot project. CMHA Ontario’s Your Health Space has delivered workplace mental health training to Ontario’s health care workers since May 2022. However, physicians functionally occupy a unique position in Ontario's health care workforce. Recognizing the limitations of existing programs that focus on individual physician wellness, CMHA Ontario’s project emphasizes organizational strategies to cultivate a culture that prioritizes physician well-being. The "Fostering Physician Well-Being Through Leadership" pilot project, rolled out from February to March 2024, involved over 30 senior healthcare leaders and physicians from 11 hospitals and family health teams across Ontario. The curriculum, segmented into three modules, focuses on recognizing unique stressors affecting physicians, adopting strategies to support them, and fostering a conducive work environment for their well-being and retention. The pilot was co-facilitated by an Ontario physician. This project generated positive participant feedback, embracing a clearly-defined roadmap needed to help leaders support physician well-being in the workplace.
