Summary/Abstract:

In this session, participants will take part in an instructional demonstration and overview of the Evidence2Practice (E2P) Ontario Anxiety Disorders and Major Depression (A&D) tool for primary care. A&D are two of the most common mental health conditions and their management is recognized as a key challenge for the healthcare system. The implementation of robust clinical decision-support tools into frontline systems provides an effective mechanism to alleviate these challenges, enhance clinician experience, and improve patient care. Recognizing this, the E2P program, using Ontario Health’s A&D Quality Standards as a framework, developed a digital decision-support tool to enable clinicians to provide more consistent, patient-centred care. The tool was developed with input and support from topic experts and the Centre of Excellence for Mental Health and Addictions and is specifically designed for use by primary care clinicians within the province of Ontario. The E2P A&D tool supports clinicians in early identification, comprehensive assessment, and timely diagnostic clarifications. It embeds first-line pharmacological treatment and adjunctive therapies to support prescribing and monitoring response to optimize therapies. It facilitates access to non-pharmacological treatment using a shared decision-making approach between patients and clinicians. Patient self-management and monitoring is supported within the tool through resources on education and navigation of the mental health system including accessible and appropriate services and supports. The tool aims to reduce health system burden by standardizing clinical processes and decreasing variations in clinical outcomes, reducing costs to healthcare systems, addressing adoption barriers and challenges, and improving patient care.
